In the midst of the turmoil currently going on in the world, let us not lose sight of this season of time - a time when we remember the completed work of grace on the cross. One song that has ministered to me over the years is "Mercy Refused" by David Baroni. It expresses the depth of God's redemption work and I urge you to ruminate on the lyrics (below) for strength in a world that needs the Jesus we know and love.
Justice demanded satisfaction
The law had been broken again and again
Judgment required immediate action
And death wanted payment for sin
Mercy refused and love took my place
There on the cross where justice met grace
Mercy refused to let me die
Jesus the Lamb was crucified
Though rightfully death wanted me
Mercy refused
Now Christ has become my righteousness
The Lord is my peace and my freedom from sin
Now I am clothed in His holiness
To a new life I entered in when
Mercy refused and love took my place....
As high as the heavens are over the earth
So great is His mercy to us
As far as the east is from the west
That's how far He's removed our transgressions from us
Mercy refused and love took my place....
I know this Easter period will be a sober one for many people but let us rest on the assurance in John 16:33 - "I have told you these things, that in me you may have peace. In the world you have oppression; but cheer up! I have overcome the world".
